LILAC's

My two Lilacs that were originally one tree that I air layered 2 years ago.
Brown pot is the top and has thickened up well. Carved a/c of die back 18moths ago...This will get scooped out may be next year if I get a flower.
No idea of the species but it does get larger leaves or did last season.
They have not grown large this year so what happened is a guess.
