My new tropical setup

hey all so i live in melbourne and with the horrible weather we have here 85% of the time i thought i would use an old 4ft fish tank i had for a tropical setup have attached some pics for you all to see all comments welcome as you can see im getting 99% humidity with the little fogger i bought it is a reptile one terranium fogger the light is a aqua one 4ft plantgro light

Looking good! You may need to have a bank of the grow lights as from memory this is one of the more challenging aspects - getting the light intensity high enough to encourage good growth (ie not leggy).

If you haven't had a look take a browse through the bonsaihunk website as Jerry does some amazing work with tropicals in far North America using artificial lights.

yea to get more light im trying to get my hands on some mylar to reflect it better but i have had more growth on it in the last week than i have had in the last 3 months outside so it seems to be doing a good job but i am definitely looking into getting something to boost it more i have a second fogger on the way to dont reckon im getting enough lol

How much do the foggers cost? And the top tank Shell where did you source that. I'm using an old tank but I just have the bottom full of coir when I dries out i re wet. No idea on actual humidity but heat and humidity are defiantly alot higher than out if it. Gigs went nuts. But pulled them once the real hot weather started as it got to hot. Would prefer to put it in a covered area and see how it goes setup more like yours. Would probably only use it in winter. Just to keep developing my smaller figs.

its just a standard 4ft tank nothing special i have actually changed the setup a bit and gone with a different humidifier wasnt getting the resultsi was after tank was just 2 big

the fogger you can buy at any aquarium that stocks reptile stuff usually about $50 the popular one is from exoterra im running about 25 deg and 100% humidity and i have now sourced the mylar so it will get even brighter hopefully will help the plants a bit more

Cheers $50 is well in my budget for a humidifier to play with...

if you need to get mylar either visit a hydroponics shop or if you want the cheap way out like me lol go onto officeworks website and there is a product called an emergency thermal blanket its actually mylar and you can just cut it out to size and use that its $4 which is like 1/8 of the price of a roll of mylar

Wow, it was all so beautiful. I like the innovation you have done with your aquariums. I have just bought the aquarium from an online website. Now I will also try these in my aquariums.

you have to be very careful with the humidifier with excess water sitting in the tank if you never wanna have to worry about it put a hole in the bottom of the tank to drain the water into a bucket i have noticed lots of excess water in the tank heaps of growth seems to be going about 3 times the speed of having it outside in melbourne so very happy with that

How's your tropical setup coming along. Very interested to see if you could using something like this to generate significant Airial root production on PJ's.

im still messing with it atm but i was getting a fair bit of aerial roots but have completely cut off all branches and forcing it to regrow new ones to get it to a point i like the previous branch setups were not to my liking but yes was getting lots and lots of aerial roots
the biggest problems im facing with the setup is the excess water sitting in the bottom of the tank havent worked out a way to get rid of it yet thinking kitty litter to soak it up but that will still only work temporarily so any ideas would be appreciated

This is great thanks for the heads up mogg, this may be a stupid question, but the tank i have was for tropical fish, would the light I have with it be good as a heat source, or would I be better off buying a grow light?

you might be able to sit your plants on a shelf a bit above the water in the bottom, then pump it or syringe it out every few weeks? Even a layer of large size gravel could do the trick... leaving a gap where you can insert the pump...?
