Dwarf hinoki

Post by Blackfoot »

So I'm wandering through the plants aisle at bunnings. Notice a little shrubbush number amongst some real sad lookin junis.
Needles to say I was delighted when I realised it was a dwarf hinoki.
Purchase. Take home. Stare at. Water. Continue staring.
Realise I actually know nothing about hinoki.
Please throw advice at me as its a beautiful little false cypress and I want to do it justice.

they are wonderful bonsai material but take many years to develop as they are slow growing.

I've found they need to be thinned out to allow light in.

They benefit from foliage spraying.

They brown a little in winter.

Blood and bone helps push green growth.

They are pretty hardy and pliable.

There are some good videos on the net.

They pretty much don't back bud at all so pruning to avoid leggy branches is a must.
One of the fabulous things about growing bonsai is as you get old and decrepit your trees get old and beautiful
