Mixing copper and aluminium wire on the same tree?

Post by Theodore »

Ausbonsai Clan,

I've had a trawl through the forums and couldn't find the answer, so here goes.

Is there any issue with using a mixture of copper and aluminium wire on the same tree?

I'm sure there is some chemistry involved but not sure if it would be detrimental to the tree.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Theo

there could be some electrolysis (galvanic corrosion ) if the wires went down the trunk into damp soil.

Its also been proven that both metals can give off a very low voltage if wet. Not sure if it would affect the heath of the tree, but best not to mix the wires.

Why would you mix copper and aluminium?

I did this on a large juniper with Mauro Stemberger because I didn't have all the right gagues in copper. He didn't seem to care less.

The black aluminium is corroding a little bit but the tree is in pristine health.

Hopefully it's ok haha....

It would be fine mate. They won't cause any harm to your trees.

I don't trust Bonsai, they are a little shady.

I'd hazard a guess and say the only real harm would be to the metals affected by the galvanic corrosion themselves, after some time as they corrode you may get some leaching into your soil, but you would have removed the wire due to growth before then.
