Brachychiton bidwillii
I have hundreds of seeds of this plant at the moment, usually once they drop the brush turkeys eat them. Has anyone ever seen it as a bonsai?
Does anyone want any seeds?
A stamped self addressed envelope will be all it takes... I see that they need to be soaked in just boiled water for 30 seconds, then soaked overnight in lukewarm water.. I'll give it a go!
It's not a large tree.... and not very common either, I believe. Growing on very stony ground behind my place with no care...

Re: Brachychiton bidwillii
Swap would be fantastic! What do you have?
I see you like carnivorous plants too... LOL! I have lots of them as well.
Really, I'll try anything you reckon will go ok here in Brisbane.

Re: Brachychiton bidwillii
I grow Brachychiton acerifolis (seed grown and a couple of select forms), B. rupestris and I think B. discolor.
I have found they back bud easily with a hard cut but shoots grow long and straight, usually only one at the expense of the rest. Wiring tends to weaken the branch and allow a new leader to take all the energy. I think larger trees may work but could be a long term project.
I have successfully removed large amounts of roots. They do have a tendancy to form tuberous roots just below the surface. These can be weirdly shaped in pot stock and can be incorporated in the design.
I'ld also be interested in some seed. Pm me your address and I'll post you a stamped envelope.
Cheers

Re: Brachychiton bidwillii
I've had two of these trees growing out behind my house, and never done a thing to them.... I guess they'll be similar to the other Brachychitons? I'll do some experimenting with pruning now, and might even try some cuttings. Thanks for the info!
I'll pm you now.

Oh wow, I didn't see your reply Milo! That's great to see, thanks for sharing!
My tree has a couple dozen big seed pods, so will be happy to send them off to anyone who would like to give them a try. (Beats letting the scrub turkeys eat em!)

Re: Brachychiton bidwillii
Hi there, sorry, all the seeds are gone now. (Most eaten by the butcher birds.)
I'll let everyone know when it sets seed again next summer.
