Rogor defoliation.

Post by Jow »

I am guessing a spray of rogor a couple of days ago is the cause of this elm suddenly defoliating itself. It's basically dropped green healthy leaves.

The rogor has certainly helped with my trident thrip issues but the elm doesn't seem to have liked it.

Any ideas to the contrary?

I have had the identical experience about 5 years ago. Mid summer and a completely defoliate do elm (Jacqueline Hillier) it did not recover fully until the following spring. Perhaps it is rogor or possibly systemics in general. In recent times I have used confidor very reservedly but elms never get rogor

Thanks for the info Gerard. Hopefully this corky bounces back. It's been a pretty strong grower previously and has been growing into a nice bonsai so it would be a shame to lose it or any branches.

I have found this with Elms in general, their lack of tolerance to systemic pesticides has seen me ridiculed here for just that.

So it seems I might be right after all, although most times they recover, but hot weather does put up some problems.

Good luck.

I think they use confidor to control elm leaf beetle so maybe that's the go?

i haven't gone near my English elms with anything systemic in a few years. Confidor caused leaf loss in otherwise very healthy trees. i havent tried it on any other elm spp, but it sounds like many others have had similar experiences :2c:

Well it looks like it's bouncing back. It's full of new buds and seems to have not really missed a beat.

Sure was an easier way to defoliate then scissors but probably not recommended.

I remember having a discussion with QV about defoliating Chinese elms and he said he would never bother, but if he had to a quick spray of confidor would be the way to go....so it's probably only been as stressed as though it had gone through a standard defoliation
