Aerial Roots over last 10 days

Post by mcgee »

Just tried the method that Tess from bonsai northside in qld mentions on her website using straws. We have had some extremly hot and humid weather so that also helps. Im quite amazed at the amount of growth over just 10 days.
Im going to place the whole tree in a larger bucket on bricks with water in it to get a hot house affect to increase the humidity and promote more roots.

Red line on top is 10 days ago and bottom is today.

Hello Joe,

Well Done

That's funny seeing your post. I have a small MB Fig that i am trying to get the aerials to at least survive, let alone get to the ground. So i too, about 2 weeks ago tried straws myself as well as several mists per day. I checked mine yesterday, all stunted except one which grew about 1 - 2 cm. No humidity here though.

Congrats to you :hooray:

Kevin

P.S. This is mine - looks like mine needs to go into rehab. for a while.

Amazing growth rate... is the bottom of the pot sitting in water? Or is the pot on bricks just above the water?

Its just sitting on the ground atm.. just have to aquire a bucket big enough. It will be sitting out of the water though to get the humidity without rotting the roots.

Kevin try glueing chop sticks around your pot and wrapping glad wrap or plastic around them keaving the top open.. this should increase humidity while still allowing air flow. Sit your pot on bricks above a water tray too. Dont completly close the tree in or you will find that you will get mold!

Thanks Joe,

I hadn't completely decided what my next move was going to be, i have concocted several theories, but as you say - careful not to the detriment of the plant. I really do like your idea, thank-you for sharing this.

In Sydney, especially lately where i am, i can feel the cold quickly beginning to engulf so some rapid growth of aerial roots would definitely help the canopies' overall health sustain for its dormant period.

I really loved the coincidence of us both doing the same thing independently, i think the straws just look so funny.

Thanks again for your help and good luck with your plant too.

I have previously used the aerial root in a straw technique and it does work very well. If you ensure that water flows into the straw when watering you get a very quick result as the straw keeps the moisture in for quite a few hours encouraging the growth. The downside of this method is that the roots grow ramrod straight as there is no room for any movement.
