Collected 30 year old bougainvillea 2 years on

Post by srini »

I chainsawed this bougy down and dug it up almost exactly 2 years ago to a bare stump. The person I got it off said it had was there 30 years ago when they bought the house. I trimmed it right back less than a month ago and let it go. With a bougy stump this size and very healthy the growth is ridiculous. Will give a trim again tomorrow and show the results.

Nice one. This species flowers more than once a year. I got a smaller one I like it a lot.
Always we hope someone else has the answer.

Looking good! When you cut it back to a bare stump, did you have any roots on it,or did most of those come away when you dug it up? How long before it began to shoot? I ask because I have recently pulled two large bougies.
Cheers.

There were still roots, though not many fine feeders. I probably could have been a bit more drastic with the roots but really didn't want to kill the spectacular stump. It took abuut 3 weeks for it to shoot. Unfortunately it didn't shoot in all the places that I'd hoped, just did what I thought would best suit the stump with what I was given. Basically no shoots in the middle section perhaps because of the large, natural hollow through the middle. Plan to get a nice pot for it and repot at the end of the year. Getting to work on it now, will post a photo in a bit.

And yes kvan, far more than once a year.

Here's a pic after a bit of a trim.
