Pumice is actually surprisingly tough. I have quite a few from softball size to the size of man's torso. I was very apprehensive about their strength when I first got them. Started off handling them with great care. I planned to hollow them out and plant mainly satsukis in them. I then went to.... had to know how strong they are, so I started "testing" it.

I started dropping it from low heights and gradually went higher. I ended up at 2 meters and all it does is chip a little bit off. I knocked it with a rock several times but that only chips them to. The advantage they have is they are like a sponge. They CAN take pressure from the outside. I now have 5 satsukis planted in them. They can take an lot more punishment than a little bonsai root can ever put on them. I would use them as a root over anytime. Best is to drop it on concrete starting "softly" to see if it has a crack in it

If it doesn't break then by all means go for it

They are natural moss attractors though. After a while you don't see the pumice anymore. It'll be covered in moss...
