Learn the art of Japanese gardening from Japanese expert Mr Shosaku Kawase, in Canberra for one weekend only on the weekend of 2 and 3 April 2016.
Mr Kawase will give presentations and workshops on Japanese gardening and Niwaki styling, which will be repeated over the two days.
Essence of Japanese Gardening presentation – learn about the ancient fundamentals and philosophy of Japanese gardening, dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries when the masters built many of the historical gardens.
A presentation of Mr Kawase’s personal photography of Japanese Gardens, including Four Seasons of Japanese Gardens, Line and Wabi and Shaping Trees and Maintenance.
For anyone interested in Japan or Japanese gardening. Mr Kawase has learnt many traditional techniques and adapts them to modern technologies.
The presentation lasts for 2 to 2.5 hours and includes tea and coffee. Tickets are $39 and $34 for members of Friends of the Arboretum.
Niwaki Styling Workshop – Niwaki technique is the specialised sculpting of trees to give structure to a Japanese garden and convey spiritual and cultural significance.
Mr Kawase will demonstrate seasonal maintenance and Niwaki styling on the Arboretum’s Japanese black pines. This session will also take 2 to 2.5 hours and include tea and coffee. Tickets are $59 and $54 for members of Friends of the Arboretum.

About Mr Kawase - Mr Kawase graduated from the Osaka Agricultural and Horticultural College in 1972. He began working as a specialty gardener for the Imperial Household Agency at Kyoto, The Imperial Palace, and Shugakuin Villa, maintaining their gardens for 13 years.
He was then engaged to design gardens for the Department of Finance for 6 years. After this, Kawase was engaged by the Forestry Department developing, maintaining and pruning gardens in Kyoto for 4 years.
Mr Kawase became Chief Gardener for the historical Katsura Imperial Villa and Shugakuin Villa in Kyoto. Following this period, he was engaged as Professional Assistant Manager of Historic Gardens at the Japanese Forestry Department.
Mr Kawase is recognised internationally for his expertise in pruning and maintenance of Kyoto’s three Imperial Villas.
In 2014 Mr Kawase published the book “Katsura, Sentogosho and Shugakuin”.
