Brisbane swampy...

I bought some swamp cypress babies this morning.

People from Brisbane and other hot areas, do you keep the plants in water most of the time?

What do you do once you've put them into a bonsai pot? Tray with rocks and water underneath?

Last time I tried a swampy was 30 years ago, and it passed a long time ago. Would love to have a slightly longer living one this time.

I have all my swampies I am growing on growing on gravel beds or saucers filled with deco. They rocket away when you lets the roots run away a bit. Of course ground growing is even better. Feed them heaps of chook poo

I have them sitting in water if I want them to grow vigorously but if you're happy with the height and the growth they are putting out I take them out of the water to slow it down cause they can get out of control quickly. I give mine fertiliser regularly. Chicken poo like Bougy fan suggested would be good to use. Definitely a great species to work with. Mines probably one of the best trees I have in my collection. I wasn't sure if the plants, once in bonsai pots, were still meant to be in water. I'll definitely grow them on for a bit yet, so here comes the bucket of water and chook poo!

You only want them in water to accelerate growth. Once in a bonsai pot they will live quite happily without sitting in water. Come along to the Bimer show if you want more info or more plants
