Just a reminder of what was exhibited last year. Several of these ore on display again at the same venue with lots of different wonderful Australian natives.

Sad that you are no longer involved, I hope we see you occasionally.
What I was trying to say....... 54 trees on display about 15 or so of them were on display last year. You can see the improvement in them and lots of trees which were not there last year

The AABC Convention 2019 (Australian Natives) is getting close now. Registrations close this weekend!
I thought it was a good time to look back 4 years.
Selection committee has had a tough time trimming the numbers of trees available. Perhaps a dozen of the trees in this post will make the exhibition this year. Australian natives sometimes develop so quickly that they would not be recognised 4 years later.

*Inclusion of many different artists
Were some of the things considered when selecting trees for this exhibition which will showcase the standard of trees being grown.
I expect about 80 trees

Gerard (and all that have contributed) - thank you. This is quite a brilliant thread. Absolutely fantastic. And wow!

A very personal thing trees. I have a bias for some styles re: natives - I am attracted to windswept, informal slanting, semi/cascading forms and if they are in groups, all the better. Give me slender, winding trunks - bare to the end and I am a pig in poo too. This thread feeds my bias.

PS - John Henry’s cascading lepto’s in this thread are great too. Even though I do not know the gent, I am somewhat saddened that John is no longer in Bonsai. I thank him for his trees and for time that he was in bonsai too.

I freely admit to being a native plant racist (one of those occurrences where my father's very good form of mania for native/ indigenous species actually pushed me into the totally opposite direction of exotic ornamental deciduous & flowering, but with the same mania!) but every single one of these is exceptional. As i scrolled through i kept going "that's my favourite" until i had to stop trying to choose favourites at about #25 or so!

There is a level of subtlety of touch in each of these that reveals the genius of the artist without it having being imposed overtly onto the tree. Many times we can be in such a rush to tell our own perspective or story through the tree that we fail to let the tree speak for itself. I know i am certainly guilty of ham-fistedly pursuing an idea that may not be suitable for a particular tree and turning it into the plant equivalent of Donatella Versace's face post-plastic surgery.

Here i see the trees speaking of the skill of the artist, rather than the artist forcing the tree to speaking of the art. It makes all the difference in the world and i congratulate the efforts, skill, knowledge, time and patience devoted to these trees.
