Juniper Squamata: start of the journey

Post by Thymetraveller »

Back in August last year, I bought this twisted-trunked juniper. Something in tbe way it reared up like a dragon drew me to it.I potted it up at a workshop with Megumi Bennet at Bonsai Art, took it home...and nearly killed it! I pinched and pinched and pinched until the poor tree almost gave up the ghost. A couple of months later, the error of my ways pointed out to me, I began a strict regime of leaving the tree well alone, apart from regular seasol and granular feed. This morning, the tree in good health, it was time to get to work.
Here it is before the workshop:

Megumi was as helpful as ever and gave me a real masterclass in wiring and helped me see where the tree wanted to go.
Here's where we left it:

The branches on the right and in the centre will grow longer and drape downwards, and it will need a more appropriate pot...by an Aussie potter, I reckon. I'll let it recover for a while though...
