japanese maple colour

My Japanese maple has coloured up again this year, a beautiful red. just had to share it with you all.
The jade next to it is looking good as well this year.

Very nice reds there.
It must be a bit colder in central Vic Miagi. My tridents have almost lost leaves but the Japanese maples have not even started to change colour yet.

It's been unseasonally warm and I've lost a few leaves to sunburn but I haven't seen a trace of red yet. Yet the other non-Japenese maples around town are all sorts of reds and dropping leaves like crazy.
This will be my first winter with a maple. Is it normal for the reds to take longer to show?

Autumn colouring - i'll do my best here, if you get lost type ABSCISSION into a search engine and explore for yourself, unfortunately our Wiki is presently void of abscission.

Actually C8lyn, i just deleted the start of my explanation. While it's a simple phenomena (leaf fall and it's associated colourings) to explain there are quite a few variables which make it a tad lengthy to write.

Yes, at times red can be one of the last colours to show, but not always.

Abscission is the word you need - explore for yourself.

Hi all, thankyou for the kind words. This tree is one of the oldest trees in the Bendigo Bonsai Club, and actually belongs to an aged member whom I maintain it for. Its age probably borders around 45 years. I don't think anyone knows its origin, so I can't tell you what variety it is. If you look closely at the trunk, you will see a fair amount of dead wood as part of the trunk. this is a natural transition of the tree as it has travelled through time with its owners care. The colour is now getting darker as this cooler weather sets in, and will probably start to shed leaves in another week or two.
