Hi, I bought this blackpine for exaclty $76. It was said to be over 20yrs old. The pot itself is probably cost $50
The only problem is that it was not looking after for a long time. All the branches seem to be too elongated. I have trimed them a bit and also removed the apex but it still doesn't look much better. Is there any other way to improve the overly elongated branches? Can BP grow mow needles on bare brancher? Is there any potential for this tree?

lol, another first reply for ya mate
anttal will be the one to be asking questions on this one, he has his head wrapped round pines.
i do know you can get them to back bud but im not sure on the specifics! i only have a little starter JBP and its nothing worth looking at right now, just trying to grow it!
SHOHIN YAKUZA!!! taking the top half of trees of since 2005!
and growing trees for the future generations! 50+ year plans
The removal of all the foliage on any branch will result in it dying. It is therefore necessary to cut back no further than to the last shoots. I do believe that removal of the existing leader would be possible as there is a weaker shoot lower down which could be encouraged to take over the lead.
My name is Don. I'm a UK nutter and bonsaiholic but I'm on medication (when I can find the tablets)
Mate go to the virtual section and follow directions to the free on line virtual designing. This helps me decide my trees future.Any ways i had a play around and came up with this idea. check it out. Hope it will help you decide.

Hi i agree your jbp has had some neglect. I think you should concentrate on getting it back to good health. It is sparse on the foliage, i would want a good year of candle pushing for this pine just to get some health back. it prob hasent been repotted for a long time either. Hows the soil, is is free draining well or is water pooling on the surface? id suggest give it good sun, fertilise once a month liquid organic and if you want to do any work maybe reduce the height to a well placed small branch as the new leader as its to tall for current trunk thinkness. If it looks much better in 12 months time then we can start getting growth in closer. cutting back branches to a inner bud or set of needles on a weak pine can lead to disaster, if the bud terminates you will lose that branch. Maybe its healthier than the pictures display....?

Oh no, I think they all terminate now as I have cut all the leaders of all branches. to shorten them. I think I am killingthe poor tree
im refering to if you shorten a branch to its most inner bud or set of needles and if that bud/ needles die you will lose that branch. Your lower branches in general will be weaker than the apex as pines are apical dominant. On a stong healthy tree this isent normally a worry but on a weaker tree it can be. if you only cut off the end growth but have plenty of inner buds/needles your ok id say .very rarely will buds pop from a bare branch however i have seen it but this is seldom and only on very healthy trees.
I have repot the pine and trimed a quarter of the outer (near the rim) roots at the same time when I trimed the branches and used normal bonsai mixed bought form Bunnings. I just checked them this morning and found some small yellow (candels?) that contain a lot of pollen. Also found some tiny small new buds near the terminals (not on bear sections). This is promising to me coz at least I know that I didn't kill it yet.
Is there any good fertiliser for pine?

sounds like its flowering which is a good sign. usually they flower before bud set and candle elongation but there is a lot of variety within the JBP genius and all are alittle different. fertiliser wise just use a osmocote slow release pellet ontop of soil , replacing every six months and when you see bud swelling or candles pushing any liquid like miracle grow, power feed (what i use) will do once a month for your tree i think. Seasol is more a root tonic and dosent contain much nitrogrn for growth ( what you want atm) power feed has 12% nitrogen plus seasol and other things in it. smells alittle fishy but only when mixing. available from bunnings in a green bottle.
forgot to add dont liquid fert for the first month, some growers do (me included) but to be safe.
