[Lane][ex Hugh Grant] juniperus sp.
Species: juniperus sp.
Height: 30cm
Source: backyard nursery
Cost: free ( given to me) The plan is to create a tunaki out of this tree on the piece of wood pictured. im not a fan at all of tanuki and swore i would never create one as you hardly see it done well. although i have seen some amazing results on this forum lately so i thought id give it a go. i have the materials so why not. the wood is from work and my boss challenged me to make something out of it with a juniper so im going to try.

Re: [Hugh Grant] juniperus sp.
got busy today on my entries including this one.
ill now be leaving it till the end of spring probably to recover the best it can before i do any major wiring.
Hugh
the tree was slotted into a natural groove in the wood. it ended up needing a bit of tweaking here and there but nothing the makita couldnt fix. it was screwed into place and wire braces to hold it tightly in until its set in position. the tree was repotted too.ill now be leaving it till the end of spring probably to recover the best it can before i do any major wiring.

Re: [Hugh Grant] juniperus sp.
not much has happened with this juniper the last few months, just been recovering from the repot.
i cleaned out the branches of useless and weak foliage in preparation for wiring.

Re: [Hugh Grant] juniperus sp.
got round to doing some rough work on the dead wood, cleaning the live vein and wiring, styling the tree. Am pretty happy with the result. the long branches needed compressing heavily to compact the tree well.

Thanks buddyAndrew F wrote:Wonderful tanuki, beautiful job wiring this tree mate. Where did you source the raffia from? If you dont mind me asking.
I found the raffia in spotlight, they regularly stock it in the floristry section. Just needs soaking for at least half an hour prior to use to loosen it up and make it more pliable.

Re: [Hugh Grant] juniperus sp.
Hi Hugh, Why do you not like tanuki? I really like this, you have done a good job with the styling, it has good flow, the shape of the driftwood with the way you have styled the branches shows good harmony. A bit more development and this will be a good tree. Well done
