I just went and dug a bit of this out of a very old garden, and have no idea what it is (Pretty flowers tho) it does appear to gain a thick trunk with time, but has a strong suckering habit.
any suggestions as to what it is?
It appears to be decidious.

no, flower doesn't look like a prunus flower... more like a tiny rose? nieghbour suggested a may bush... but the flower doesn't quite match that either

I was thinking of trying to develope a single trunked tree, there is definately a thick enough stump there, but you are right, it would make an awesome clump style, Just hoping to find out what it is first....

This reply is only three years late but I know Paddles still looks on here. It is Prunus glandulosa rosea plena. See link below. The single flowered form has small plums on it about the size of a pea,and quite tasty.
it's not a sprirea, best guess from the nurserys around here is a that it is some form of almond. no fruit, leaf doesn't look quite right.. but I finally have a piece growing in the garden, so in a year or 2, I'll have a tree to take to the club and see what it is...

My in laws have a few almond trees and the flowers look the same.
I have been trying to convince them to let me air layer it for years but she doesn't like the idea .
old nursery guy here, says approx 20 yrs ago, a "shrub" flowering almond was very popular, it fell out of fashion, and is no longer available. you're welcome to a piece of this when it gets going. apparently it's a bit of a week
