When is the best time to remove a bougainvillea air layer? I have a very large trunk that I am air layering. ( 200mm diameter)
I think it has enough roots to support it self now. I know that bougainvillea are hardy but should I be removing it like most trees in spring/summer?
Thanks

Re: When to remove Bougainvillea air layer?
I removed mine in late Winter when the tree was dormant. During the first year, it flowered but the plant was weak so I cut off all the flowers before they opened.
It just went through it's second season and have grown so much roots that I will have to re-pot this year in late winter to early spring.

Tough one. I have found myself in this situation , if you leave it over winter it will need a close eye to keep water up to it and what ever else may happen. If you remove it now I reckon it should be ok having heaps of roots but might need some winter protection from frosts if you get them?
If you do decide to leave it I would recommend protecting the layer from sunlight as another 3 months in the sun algae could start to develop and make it all slimy killing the roots , happened to me with a beautiful crepe myrtle layer.

Hi Homer , mate I have a bougy layer which is ready to remove after 9 weeks of layering . These are still growing good foliage and have plenty of roots so I wouldn't hesitate to remove it now .

In the tropics is moving any time, so move it in the growing season. Picture of the tree would be nice.
