Advanced Critique????

Post by Gerard »

Tuesday June 28 7pm with Taiga Urishibata
Many people have asked.......... what happens at the advanced critique?
Participants will bring along 2 trees each, these will be established trees in bonsai pots. Owners may be reluctant to take their very best trees to a workshop so this will be an opportunity to ask questions such as.
......should I reduce the height?
......should this branch come off?
......is there a better viewing angle?
......is there a better potting angle?
......should I choose a different pot?
......how can I overcome a fault in the tree?
or perhaps.......I am very happy with the progress, can I make it better?
Participants will then be given advice on what Taiga would recommend, advice only and a plan for the future of the tree. No commitments to make drastic changes.
When the booking form came out this was my first choice. As a participant it is a chance to make my trees better, as an observer I will learn how to make good trees better.

What an awesome opportunity to advance the hobby in Australia.

All the backyard experts spouting "there are no rules in Bonsai" get in their and take it on the chin. :aussie:

The ones I have been to have been very informative. Cutting or otherwise changing a tree is rare and only with the owner's approval. The expert will usually start off listing the good points about the tree, then follow up with a few points to improve. Sometimes they will make comments about trends they notice in Aussie bonsai that relate to the particular tree under review - "I see many trees planted too high in the pot. Pot trees so that nebari is just visible above pot rim"

Critique is a great way to get a boost for having produced a good tree but also get some pointers on how to improve.
