Currently 250mm tall and in need of foliage reduction. I've been letting it grow as it was worked a bit hard and the foliage was turning juvenile.

Re: [Steven] Juniper X Media 'Lemon Hill'
G'day,
I've thinned the foliage, rewired all branches and tried to create more individual foliage pads on the branches. Stripped some bark from the trunk and this will be progressively widened by a couple of mm each time over the next couple of years.
The dead wood has been reduced to simplify it and the next stage is to carve it a bit to make it look older.
It's now 240mm tall.
Regards,
Steven

Gorgeous! Spot on the Jinn needs to be reduced... but not too much. My only gripe is that the shari is on the outside curve, which might cause it to thicken on the inside of the curve and cause a strange bulbous appearance... great thing is that's a superb excuse to add more shari down the track if it does happen...Steven wrote:G'day,

Work good friend. Impressed am I.
There are many ways to do things, but only one "best" way.

Looks awesome Steven! Love the Jin!
Would be great to see the underside of the branch structure if possible...
Keep up the great work!

Thanks Mo, the shari will be widened a couple of times each growing season until there is eventually only a single live vein coiling around the trunk. Doing it gradually will let the wood grow a bit at a time so that the shari looks natural.MoGanic wrote:My only gripe is that the shari is on the outside curve, which might cause it to thicken on the inside of the curve and cause a strange bulbous appearance... great thing is that's a superb excuse to add more shari down the track if it does happen...

The shari is healing nicely along the trunk and I'll look at widening it in a month or 2. I'm not going to trim it for a while to try and encourage more mature foliage.

Hi Steven,
A fantastic progression and lovely tree, the pairing is sensational I have to say.
I have to ask mate, now the tree is filling out, what is your intention with the jin ? I just read what your intention is with the shari (from back in Aug) but the jin ? rather than try to suggest, try to guess, I would love to hear where you are intending on heading with it ?
Cheers

Re: [Steven] Juniper X Media 'Lemon Hill'
I'm trying to encourage the mature foliage to take over so I won't be trimming this one until the growing season stops.
I want to refine the jin by carving (scratching) it to make it look older. It will be a slow and tedious task.
Regards,
Steven

I'm yet to do the work I wanted to get done on the deadwood. Hopefully I'll have a chance now that all the tree's are slowing down.

Steven

Re: [Steven] Juniper X Media 'Lemon Hill'
I just saw that you'd cut the jin back cos it was over the 250mm height...(that was back at the end of the last comp,) thought I'd mention that Marc Noelanders talked about this at the convention, and said the jin isn't counted when looking at the overall height of the tree. I'm sure he mentioned that was what was happening now in Japan, so whether it's something new or not I'm not certain.

Re: [Steven] Juniper X Media 'Lemon Hill'
I've expanded the shari as well as adding a few more on the front and back.
