Umbrella tree?

Post by bonborn »

Can someone talk to me about this tree. I have been reading up but am still confused. Are there different varieties and can I work out what this one might be. Still don't know what under the soil. Quite large and I am not sure I'll keep this or sell :lost: . Does this have any potential? ImageImageImageImage

Bonborn, definitely a Schefflera but you're right trying to figure out which of the 100's of them this one is could take a while. They don't flower profusely in pots and as you may know that is the key to ID. Maybe Schefflera actinophylla but I don't think the leaf is big enough and that is just because it is common or Schefflera arboricola that has just been "let go". I have three varieties recently posted, you can certainly bonsai them but I think there'll be two very different sides to the argument.
I would, if it were mine, be removing the long extension (maybe airlayer for future and another tree) and using the informal upright trunk, I have found if you cut them back to just below the level of current leaf formation they back bud very well and you begin to work with that (just me of course). I would like to see a better photo of the informal upright by itself to see if I am right about my suggestion.
anyhooo.... you're tree, you're decisions
enjoy it

I have one of these as well. Always wanted to know what it was exactly as it was left here 16 yrs ago when we bought our house. I repotted way back then and only just repotted it with major root prune and cut back I think in May/April this year.

Its now has new leaves coming out (thought I might have killed it). I'll take some pics tomorrow and post them for you.

Cheers

Thanks wattynine and fruit fly. Is now a good time to repot these. I might just airlayer that top bit but don't want to remove either of the branches as I might just sell it off. I have a bunch of different species happening at the moment and definitely don't need another. I just picked it up along with another tree is was interested in.
