This has been said before and I believe by what I have read here. That it needs to be said again.
When a tree is put up for sale.

That is it, it is the up to prospective buyers to either put in a bid on open forum or PM.
No critique should be entered in to to make the seller feel bad or any member for that matter.
It is offered in good faith. If you are genuine in your bids make them known to the owner.

Just to get a perspective on AGE have a look at my post Private in the exotics. Age is irrelevant.

If these are the guidelines here, then I will accept them as that, and that will be the end of it.

However, as a beginner who is trying to learn and trying to build a collection, I require discussion on an object of potential purchase. I do not yet have an accurate concept of what is and isn't valuable in a Bonsai. Proper civilised discussion on Bonsai that are up for sale, is possibly one of the best ways to establish that. It also helps learn what are desirable attributes to have in my own Bonsai.

If I see a tree for sale at a particular price, and have a good understanding through discussion why it has been listed at that price (or possibly why the price is not realistic), then I benefit and I feel the whole community benefits.

Perhaps this particular conversation shouldn't be on an actual listing, but rather in a more general topic about whether or not commentary should be entered into on items for sale...

Japh what I would suggest is you troll though or surf if that is more appropriate. The for sale columns here, then you will get some idea as to what people are asking.
For what and, what you think you should pay I have in my collection 3 trees all over 100 years old. As bonsai 4-5 years old.
One of these tree's feature in my post Morphing. I have younger tree's but, older Bonsai.
Worth more than these 100 year old tree's.

The other thing to assess is what level of refinement or how much effort has been put into the tree. Remember the Markets potted last week and are selling today.

I remember a remark of one of our Bonsai, mentors
, saying of a collection that was 30 plus years coming up for Auction there is a lot of s^3T there, even though the had been in it for 30 years.

So all is relative, the most important is what you want to pay. If you think it is worth what is asked the fine. All I can advise is to look at good Bonsai, on the sites and PM the owner with your questions on that one, but please no critique's, on the open for sale forum it is not fare.

Pup i agree with you 100% mate and im sorry ken if thats your tree mate and i offended you. Its not fair to sellers out there and we had this problem b4 with a member selling trees. I think if your trying to sell a tree and one member is saying this low and the other this high its difficult what perspective buyers might think of it all and it may discourage them to buy. Maybe put a price on it than see what responses you get, However i think this thread was initially about ken asking how much he should put on this tree if he was selling it as he was unsure or i could be wrong........now im confused

For people maybe wanting to learn whats makes a tree valuable etc we could post a tree which dosent belong to a member etc and have a discusion about it . What would you pay for it?, what reasons would you give about how much you think its worth ?etc. Pups idea on looking at other trees around and see what there going for is a good idea or if you are near a good bonsai nursery look around and try to examine why tree 1 costs alot more than tree 2 or 3.

While it is not standard practice at AB.c to allow discussion of prices or critique of Bonsai for sale in the Marketplace, this thread has thrown us into no man's land. Ken has indeed asked for feedback and some idea of a fair asking price, so the discussion going on here is within the bounds of the topic at hand.

I'll let it stand for now.

i have to apologize, i feel responsible for this, mason put in a price he thought and i said i think more considering age etc. etc. etc. which turned into a full on discussion, this i wasnt expecting or was my intentions, im glad it is ok by fly with this but i agree with all the other stuff being said that a market place isnt supposed to be an open forum for discussion on the tree.
so i hope i havent broken any of the rules

Pup i have to thankyou for this and hopefully some of our members will get alot out of it. I hope reasons behind any prices given are explained (ie i dont think its worth that because of its poor uneven nebari or bad branch placement or reverse taper up the top)as this will help those get a better understanding hopefully into why some trees cost more than others and things to look for when purchasing a tree.

For disscussion purposes, Ive a Yamadori fig, which Ive kept alive for 21 years with only natural styling. If its OK with everyone Ill post it tommorrow morning for your perusal. Just remember that It isnt for sale
