A free bougy or two

Post by alpineart »

These were collected from a dump master several weeks ago when the local hardware was tossing out loads of material .

All up 4 bins were carted away , i wasn't quick enough to rescue all the plants but i did manage to save a station wagon load of bougies , natives , junipers and numerous other plants . They were near death but most have survived and will live to see a bonsai pot one day . All the plants were tagged and written off as the new hardware took over . These have been twisted together and /or wired and will eventually have air layers set on the longer leggy material .

Cheers Alpineart .

Nice score mate. A few years in the ground and see what happens. Amazing what people throw out. What a waste.

Hi Josh , mate they were in 100mm pots so i potted them into 200 and 250mm pots . No room for ground growing bougies , i hope to keep them under control in pots and layer where necessary . The struck out price was the pots the junipers were in , they are in 300mm pots now and 1.2 high definitely will be grafting Shimpaku onto the needle juni's and twisting the long leaders into jin material .

If only i went to the hardware 1 hour earlier i would have had 200 more plants to play with instead of the 20 i managed to save .I did contemplate leaving Noah and Bear in the carpark  i could have retrieved at least twice as much but they were a little reluctant , talk about me and my shadows

Cheers Alpine

Hi Insitangus , mate the manager was the chap i spoke too and they don't give much away . Situations like this only happen on rare occasions , the waste was criminal but i managed to save a few .

, none of the reds have any colour . I have severed the layer and now have 2 to contend with, the others are very lack lustre .

Hi Boom64 ,mate the white cascade would have to be the easiest plant to work with . This has had 2 minor trims since it was obtained it is almost a natural bonsai in itself compared to the upright versions . The rest are struggling after a frost hit them in 2015 . This red one had the layer recently removed rather than hack the tail off .

Hi Wattynine , very little development , hence I like the White Cascade as the name implies its a natural cascade , I have 2 of these but the other white is struggling along with the rest of them .

Hi Boom' mate I just remembered I used the purple one as a floral display in the garden where our pets are buried , Its actually doing quite well even enduring the frosts .
