[WANTED] Wrightia Religiosa

Post by hard1all »

Am currently in Malaysia on my way home.
Have been inspired by the Wrightia Religiosa (Temple Bells) you see in great abundance as bonsai here.
I do know they need a consistently hot climate and I may be pushing my luck as I live in Sydney, but, I do have a hothouse.

Am keen on sourcing some advanced material to give it a go.

Will look forward to any responses, I suspect, from Brisbane and all places north.

Thanks.

Good luck with your search mate. I tried and tried to get Wrightia here in Queensland (where I know it grows, because I sent loads of it to Brisbane when I owned my Northern Territory Nursery). No luck!!! Ended up, I went up to Cairns for their Show and got myself some stock from there. Are you coming back to Australia through Darwin by chance? It is available in some Nurseries up there I believe.

You are going to need your Hot House in Sydney for this plant as well. It is deciduous during the cooler months here in Southern Queensland so it wont like Sydney's winter weather I don't think.

Alan - you could check with Leong as I know many years ago he imported some, but I don't know if they survived. Jan B.

thanks Graeme and Jan,
I've got some seeds coming in just in case I can't find advanced material
if they struggle in Brisbane Sydney may be tough
but, I also have a heater for the glasshouse

Mate, they don't struggle her in Brisbane - but they do loose their leaves in Winter, something they don't do in the Tropics. I am sub-tropical where I live and I believe some of them loose their leaves here and some don't. Waiting to see which ones I have :?:

I managed to source a few last summer but even in a heated glasshouse a Sydney winter was too much and I lost them all. So, I guess I will have to make do with photos like this wonderful shogun.

Sorry to hear that.
You won't like this either, I've put three in my ground grown and they have absolutely crazy. White flowers drooping off them everywhere and they're only 6 inches tall. I'll post them when they have some maturity. One up for NQ I guess.

I've had an interesting year with mine Watty. I got 3 from the Cairns show last year. 2 of them I put into pots and the third I planted out in the garden. The garden one has simply powered on, never dropped a leaf and like you said, flowers everywhere. One of the potted ones has also powered on. During winter it dropped around half it's leaves, which are all back again now. It is also just starting to flower, but not as many as the garden one. The third tree dropped every leaf during winter. It is still putting out leaves, having replaced around half and I noticed this morning it has one flower bud happening. You just never know what you're going to get with plants I guess.
