I need advice on this Bougie.

Post by hawkeyes »

Early this year, this bougie was dug up from a yard, chopped stump, notched it, bent it over with a guy wire. I would like to make this into a cascade. Could you give me some ideas on how to train it. Should any of these branches be trimmed to fatten up. I have wired a couple of branches, but this bougie has gone wild with flowers. Could you help.

You can wire into whatever shape you want, it is Bit hard to see thru all the foliage to give guidance at the momnet
You can defoliate completely to expose the trunks so we can see better.

If you want to thicken branching then just grow unhindered and fertilise heavily

LOL yep
was posting from my phone and that is painful! Autocorrect stuffs up everything:-(

Having a good look now I am home I can see a nice curve to the trunk/
Clean out some foliage around it and tile to the right to make cascade ( or semi)
Here is a link to my Semi cascade one viewtopic.php?f=132&t=17925

I have partially defoliated (couldn't bear to cut off flowers) to give you a better view of trunk. My thoughts were of a semi-cascade for this bougie.
Need help on what do do now. Please.

Yep I would make a cascade too. That nice curve to the low trunk lends itself to it :imo:
Repot and tilt over to the cascade and I would also remove all the shoots and branches off the inside of the bend

the branches on the top you can either remove if you like a bare top to the cascade, or keep them short and wired in the cascade direction as a green apex.

Thanks Ken, you have been v. helpful. Is it too early to pot into cascade pot, or will I use the same grow pot again.

I would Repot into the same pot to get it accustomed to a new potting angle if that pot is suitable

Thanks Ken. Should I trim the roots too, after cleaning out unwanted branches, or just tilt it with fresh mix into same pot.

This has been a progression from March, 2016, from my friends garden to this. It has been potted off three times from original dig. On the second time, I wedge cut the trunk and used a weight to anchor the top. A 3 inch screw was inserted to keep wedge clamped. They are v. hardy subjects, I just hope it perseveres with all this treatment.

I have repotted, and tilted the bougie, and removed the branches under bend. I think I'll leave the top shoots to see how they develop. Anything else I should do. Thank you for any suggestions.
