Coprosma Repens 'Coppershine'

Post by Jester »

Hi guys, has anyone had any experience trying to Bonsai the above species? If so, can you post a photo. I have read that they make very good Bonsai but I have never seen one done. Any comments about the species in terms of your experiences with it would also be appreciated.

Thanks

John :)

I googled it too, but didnt come up with any that had been bonsaied. It did say was excellent for bonsai as the leaves were small. I think you could train this plant anyway bar cascade. I would train it to a semi formal upright broom style. Then again it would look nice just formal upright with lots of clouds, similar to the mels.

Coprosma kirkii is used quite extensively as Bonsai so if you google that as Bonsai you might find some that have been posted. :)

Jamie, that picture you posted isnt coprosma coppershine. I have one and they do make good Bonsai. The name says it all the leaves are coppery red and quite small. Normal Caprosma, Although classified weed in some states, make wonderful Bonsai. The leaves reduce greatly when defoliated and they respond well to clip and grow method producing very gnarly branching. They also grow like stink.

Correct Jamie, i must have been asleep. It is still not coprosma i am used to seeing though. In Vic they also have the name mirror bush and the leaves are larger and glossy. Different from your neck of the woods? Might be worth a study.
