Re: 2018 Bonsai Tour of Japan
Hi all,
I am really pleased to be going with Shuji on his tour next year to Japan to visit again all the nurseries, gardens, temples as well as well as Kokofuten exhibition that I visited with him on his 2015 tour.
I would have liked to do it all again so when he asked me to join the tour as the bonsai specialist I couldn't refuse.
Shuji will handle all the arrangements and bookings and I will be the guide with the extra bit of Bonsai and pot knowledge.
I really enjoyed the day at the Kokofuten exhibition and the sales area at the Ueno Green Club. There are great opportunities to buy tools and pots from a wide range of vendors at great prices. In Tokoname we visit a number of kilns/potters and also the Ceramall.
There will be local Japanese guides as well in Omiya and Tokoname which make this tour really special.
Cheers,
Grant

You would need to look into Australian rules and regs about importation of plant material.bonsaeen wrote:Can you bring plants/trees back from japan?

Re: 2018 Bonsai Tour of Japan
It can be done. Several of the BSV members imported bonsai around the 1980s. I think nearly all of them survived the quarantine but I have been told since that most have died off one by one - possibly delayed results of quarantine treatment, possibly neglect by new owners? Can you bring plants/trees back from japan?
Imported trees must come through a registered quarantine station. I believe they are bare rooted and soaked/ sprayed with methyl sulphide(?) and then grown in quarantine for a full growing season so they can be checked and tested for pests and disease. After that, and after you've paid the fees, you can take them home.
You would need to talk to AQUIS about the proper procedures and costs involved and whether this is still an option today.
