Ground Planting in Colanders

Ray Thanks for Showing this, I have been wondering if I would have success with Air Layering a Swampy, by the looks of it the ground layer was a roaring success so I am assuming that the air layer would be equally successful.

Ray I am curious did you ring bark this for the ground layer or did you use a wire tourniquet?

Can you expand on your layering method for this particular tree?

Swamp Cyprus air layer very well. You should have very good success with these.

It all depends on where I choose to layer it. I have not had a great deal of success in the past with Swampy cuttings.

The section I would like to layer has a trunk diameter of approximately 30 mm. I have a swampy that is currently about 1.5 m tall and I want to shorten the entire trunk down and train a new leader to increase the taper on the tree. I hate wasting a section of truck that would probably end up being about 1 meter tall if I get it to layer off.

Hi Jarad,
That's a hard question to answer. I have layered Swampys at various diameters. A point to consider is the diameter of the section you want to layer, if it's fairly small in diameter, remember that it is going to be ring barked, so make sure it has enough diameter to cope with this and still have enough strength left in the hardwood to support the tree. I haven't had a failure with layering Swampys, I couldn't guarantee that I would have the same success with cuttings. Another point is that you can layer quite large diameter Swampys.

Hi Jeff,
My muck is made up of ground clay and Cow manure. I purchase a bag of Cow manure that is ready to use in the garden. I place this is a plastic garbage bin that has a clip lid. I put some water in on top of the Cow manure and leave it there until I need to use it. The mix is 50/50 ground clay and Cow manure. I mix this so that it is like Plasticine. If it is too thin it will fall off the layer.
