trident maple seedlings

The head gardener has been making noises about the number of trident maple seedlings in her garden. That means they need to be removed - soon.

Anyone interested in cheap seedlings?
They will be sent as they come out of the ground. No root work, mostly very little taper. 1 and 2 year old self seeded trees. Some have just a single tap root with few laterals but you can just cut the root short, plant them and they'll develop laterals when they start growing in spring. These trees are ideal to grow on for larger trunks or as an economic way to start groups.

Limited numbers of larger ones 6-10mm trunk diam @ $2 each
3-6mm thick $1 each
under 3mm trunk thickness 50c each
Prices negotiable for larger numbers.

Only a few Japanese maple seedlings this year due to poor seed crop the summer before. Mostly 3-6mm $1 each.

Seedlings will be posted bare rooted with roots wrapped in plastic bag. Estimated delivery cost $10 for smaller numbers, $15 for more/larger.

I have packs of these trident seedlings packed and ready to post off to Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and QLD tomorrow but there are still more in the garden.

Today I used some to put a group together.

Tridents are hardy so don't be frightened to trim the roots to get the best radial roots possible.

Some will have even fewer roots but I expect them all to grow strongly when spring comes.

I can recommend these seedlings as a great way to get started on building your confidence and skills, as well as your collection. I bought some last year and wrapped some together to make a larger tree, bent and twisted some to grow on as Steven showed us, and planted some groups....

Only lost one tiny whip, out of all the seedlings I messed with.

My order placed last night for 20, to use as approach and or Thread grafts to improve the roots and nebari on a larger tree i am growing.
The leftovers will be bent and twisted then potted up for the future.

I also have Japanes maple Seed from Shibui to plant out too

I received my trident maples today they look great and were packaged amazingly.
Thank you to Shibui for the Maples, looking at them should have ordered more...hahaha

I'm going to try as per Steve's post and see how i go as a beginner or just try a forest.. not sure yet.

This is my first post wasn't that hard after all...

Roots and lower trunks wrapped in damp newspaper, in a plastic bag and all wrapped in Cardboard.
Shibui certainly knows how to do thing right

I have most of them to root graft onto a Maple i have grown from seed and now need to fix the roots
Both sides need the little ones approach grafted to fill out the flat sides. Any leftovers will be twisted into pretzels and potted up for the future.

Thanks for all the interest Bonsai lovers. There are no more larger seedlings due to high demand and the limited numbers I started with. I'll try to get the Head Gardener to leave a few of this year's to grow on to supply larger size for next year but can't promise anything because Head Gardener has very strict ideas of what should be in a garden and trident seedlings is not one of them .
Medium size also in very short supply now but plenty of small ones left if you want to start with thin ones.

* These thinner seedlings would suit threading through holes in sheet metal to produce brilliant flat nebari because you don't need to make really large holes.
* Get some to grow on in a pot, tray or box so you can be assured you'll have some larger ones for your forest next year
* Smaller ones are also good for thread grafting because the holes can be a bit smaller when you drill through your tree.
* These are also the [/list]best if you plan to do some twisted trunks, especially if you plan to develop some shohin sized trees. When they get a bit thicker they are quite brittle and difficult to put severe bends into.

Just received my little Tridents from Shibui. They were really well packaged and healthy. I've wired almost all of mine and threaded through some plywood to develop their nebari. Thanks Shibui, excited to watch these guys progress. Will update this post with pictures over the weekend if there is any interest.
