Prunus shoot from bare trunk? Airlayering?
Please advise, does prunus readily shoot from bare trunk?
How about airlayering? Responds well?
Thanks

Re: Prunus shoot from bare trunk? Airlayering?
There are many different species of prunus including plums, apricot, cherry and all the different varieties and species of each of those.
Most will shoot happily from old wood and nearly all can be air layered as far as I know.

If you give us a species we can probably give more definite answers. So far you have just specified a whole genus and it happens to be a very diverse genus so it is difficult to be specific.

Hi Bonbon,
Any of the Prunus family that will grow from cutting should airlayer okay. I only have Plum at home and it is a constant job to stop suckers and the tree from growing very vigorously. The tree is in the ground at this stage of it's development.
As shibui has mentioned, let us know what species you want to layer.
Regards Ray

If I airlayer at the red marking, will the bottom part survive and shoot from bare wood?

To answer this is not quite straight forward. There are some species of trees that I wouldn't hesitate in saying yes. You have had some good responses in your other Thread. Prunus Mume styling ideas
One other idea is to try and force some back budding. During the growing season you could cut the top of the tree back very regularly and see if some buds will pop further down the trunk.

Prunus mume can be odd. I had one that sprouted like crazy each time I cut it back to the trunk. Another I lost. It didn't back bud at all. I would suggest leaving ur tree as it is. Mume look great with crazy trunks that break the normal bonsai rules
