The Major elements needed for plant growth are NPK. Nitrogen is for vegetative growth it promotes healthy vigorous growth and the nice green colour.

Phosphorus, is for the root and seed development ( Natives have a proteoid root that lets them take up maximum from minimal amount's so if it is added in too large amounts it will overdose the plant and kill it) it makes sugars and starches, it promotes early growth. Also the ripening. Plants deficient in phosphorus have poor root development poor fruiting and leaves can show red purple or even bluish green colour.
The newly cultivated soils in Australia are usually lacking in Phosphorus.

Potassium it is an important factor in the photosynthesis and the formation of carbohydrates and proteins that are vital to the plant.
Shortage of Potassium is usual noted by yellowing on the tips of the leaves which then extend inwards from the leaf margin.

These are the Macro elements

I hope this has helped in some way :) Pup
