JBP's 4 for $40
These were from Jackie a little old lady in Wangaratta who rescues unwanted trees from the surrounding districts .I have purchased some incredible rejects {Bonsai Quality} trunks from her ,at the average price of $10, its her obsession to save trees. Obviously these were ex Nursery stock ,i had seen these 3 years ago but not being into JBP i declined to purchase them .I have spent 2 days Repotting , Inarching {side grafting}the lower 1st whorls down onto the bases of the trunks and Wrapping and strapping the apexes and styling the top with a plan to produce at least 12 layered trees from the 4 originals .I will set the layers today , Nothing Ventured Nothing Gained .

Hi Bodhi ,could have been better if the bugger bent instead of that snap . Next time i will mould the other trees around a scuptured trunk so i don't repeat the issue .Cheersbodhidharma wrote:And some people freak out about root pruning. Go for it Alpine, I love your work.

It will survive ,think positive until it turns yellow ,then retry your efforts and try again. Should take about 2 years to Fuse together maybe some stainless steel screws next year to insure the bugger holds as iwould like to put another 30-40 degrees into the curves .Not asking too much.Cheers

Hi alpineart,
I imagine that if I were to do it, I would take off the barks where they touch.
I am not sure if you did that?
Please keep us posted of "this" tree progress. A long way away, but that is why this forum
Best regards.

Re: JBP's 4 for $40
Hi daiviet i didn't take the bark off for 2 reasons ,basically its pure resinous filler for the trunks to fuse quicker and for extra health to the upper portion of the tree to feed the apexes of each trunk .The branches that remained on each tree were at different positions so removing the bark in a semi spiral fashion and continuing a reliable sap flow would slow the fusion of the bark not the trunks . Pines bleed very very quickly so this would be energy lost , as i understand it .With any bleeding now from the severed branches it will fill any voids in the trunk unions .Not necessary to remove the needles as they are also resinous and if good fortune smiles upon you new shoots can burst on the occasional needle undamaged in the first year . Will keep updating for sure .Cheersdaiviet_nguyen wrote:Hi alpineart,

this is a great idea mate, how long do you think it will be before you can layer it? will you do it while the trunks are still fusing down the track or wait untill they have fully fused?
sorry if ya have already posted the answer to that, i must have missed it if you have.
regards jamie

Re: JBP's 4 for $40
Hi Jamie i still have 2 sets of whorls to side graft so that will take a good day to complete .Was hoping to have it done but things are hectic around here ,got to get the priorities in order real quick.Once the candles start to burst i will set the the layers on the top wrapped section and the whorls at the same time . The more roots the faster the process .I did repot the trees and spread the roots however i didn't trim them . Each trunk has an excellent radial root mass spread around in the upper and mid section of the pots with excellent drainage mediums for power feeding after candle burst .Cheersjamie111 wrote:this is a great idea mate, how long do you think it will be before you can layer it? will you do it while the trunks are still fusing down the track or wait untill they have fully fused?
