Advice on repotting Wisteria

I have just purchased my first Japanese Wisteria and she's a true beauty. She's at least 25 years old with thick and craggy trunk line. I really want to repot this Wisteria preferably before it starts to flower as it came in those generic black bucket as its pot. However I worry that repotting the plant might affect it's upcoming flowering season. Some sources adviced me to repot it when the buds were just about to grow out and other sources adviced me to repot only after the flowering season has ended. What are your opinions?

I repot mine after flowering
To do so now ( assuming you root prune as well), you will stress the tree when it needs it vigour the most..
Enjoy the flowers ( mine are just starting to bud now) then repot after .

I'm glad you put in the query. I have an 5-8 Chinese Wisteria. But I planted it the garden about 3 years ago. I want to put it in large pot after uprooted. It has not flowered at all, but I cut off the long trailers, and watered it well. I'll water it again and from what I have heard they don't flower until about 10 years old. I have a reasonably big ceramic square pot someone gave me, and according to some of the masters I've read, admittedly from the Northern Hemisphere, they do better being pot bound. And I intend to up root it soon. Any advice, there is evidence of dormant buds.

Thanks for the advice guys. And yes, Wisterias only start flowering after around the age of 10.

It has taken me a while to develop a routine for my wisterias.
We grow them for the flowers and accept that they look a bit ragged for most of the year.
After flowering (late October) prune dead flowers.
Then let it grow lots of fertilizer lots of water, I keep mine in about 2cm of water at the base of the pot.
Then let it grow some more
In late March or early April prune very hard, back to one pair of leaves on this years growth. Then re-pot once every 5 years or so.

Thanks for that Gerard! And WOW that Wisteria looks stunning! Would you place the wisteria on water all year long? Also how often do you fertilise your Wisteria?

Hi Gerard, thanks for the info but I don’t understand... don’t they flowers on new growth? If in March/April I prune very hard don’t I loose all the flower buds?

American wisteria flowers on new growth. Japanese and Chinese flower on one year growth. You prune Japanese wisteria in winter (to shape the tree a bit- but don't cut all the flower buds off!) but mainly the pruning is done after flowering. It should also be lightly pruned and leaf thinned in summer.
