Repotting Advice Pomegranate

My Pomegranate (nana I think) bonsai has not been reported for the last three years and is in fact in garden soil from that time.
I had initially set its structure for an open vase shape and has since ratified pretty well over the three years.
I haven't had any flowers on it but I suppose that has to do with the pruning that I was doing.
This year I wanted to do some rootwork to improve its nebari, continue ramifications except for two branches which I want to thicken.
I read in some of the topics that Pomegranate are better off repotted when it's warmer and hence held off reporting until now.
The Bonsai has put forth foliage and I was planning to repot, prune top and do rootwork ( bare root, comb and prune) this weekend.
Please advice if my approach is correct or I should rather shift some bits to the winter?

Hi Akhi,

No idea about heavy root work at this time. I repotted my pomegranate back in July as the buds were swelling. Bare rooted and cut back heavy roots from the original dig in 2016. Seems to be growing fine.

When it was first collected, it had already started shooting but as you can see from the linked thread, I didn't get stuck into the roots at that point.

Your Pomegranate appears to be very healthy. They flower on the tips of branches so you are correct, if you prune the tips you wont get flowers. They are deciduous in Canberra and I always re-pot in late winter/early spring, I would be reluctant to re-pot in warmer weather.

Don't keep it too wet and don't repot now unless you know what you're doing.

I didn't repot following your suggestions and also let some branches continue to grow unpruned this year and low behold there is a bud ready to burst.
Planning to trim after the blooms in late summer now.

I’m a beginner so forgive me if incorrect and please correct ... but

Don't you think you have two many branches starting from the same point? I would keep only one of the branches maybe the left one and tilt the plant to the right of probably 90 degrees...

What do you think?

Hi tad,
You are right the typical bonsai I understand needs to have the not just for the aesthetics but also to avoid reverse taper.
The photo doesn't do justice to it but those branches have some albeit small gaps and are not coming from one point. My ideal for this tree is a grand old oak tree with branches kissing the ground. A fair bit away from the final form though.
The potting will do next winter missed out this time round. It's also spot in the middle of the pot which is not the right thing to do either

Central planting is good with regular shaped pots - Square, Round, Hex, etc. Off centre planting is used with oval and rectangular pots.

Sadly this tree died after having leaving it with a “friend” who just didn’t water it properly
