juniperus squamata prostrata

heres a juniper i styled today i got it from red dragon at the start of the year, it was origionally grown by leong. the deadwood was done a while back and the tree was pumping growth so today i did the first styling of the foliage and did some more fibre carving on the deadwood which was hard as it was very dry by now but vastly improved the image.

eventually the deadwood will spiral up the entire trunk however for now i shall take my time with that hopefully i will continue it next yr. i am in two minds about the deadwood spike at the moment however i will leave it there for the time being as im unsure if it will be better to have it there once the shari flows from bottom to top. after all i cant put it back once its gone.

also im woundering is it to late in the season to repot this tree into a slightly oversized pot. the tree has a mass of fiberous roots so i think it should be fine but i thought id get your opinions before i procede.

I see a good styling result.
I can never appreciate these unnaturally contorted trunks, although the man in the street seems to have been educated into expecting this in a bonsai. Who would have thought that trunk was inside there from the first picture?
Nevertheless jarryd, you did it well.

jarryd as always great work from you! it will make a great tree even if it does look like a larch. i would allow new growth to push before a repot and then take care to shade it in the hotter weather and you will be fine.

Hi Jarryd,

Thats an awesome tree mate. I like it. I don't think its too late to repot. I've repoted a juni in the middle of summer and it was fine, its the after care thats vital. But as Anttal says maybe just give it some time to recover or even leave it till next spring. Last thing you want is for the tree to cark it after all that great work you've put into it. Well done and thanks for sharing.

the old story is that you can pretty much do a juni all year round? true! but i have found they do alot better when new growth is pushing rather than straight after a hard prune and style. i have repotted in the middle dec last summer. shade for 6 weeks then gradually brought it out. a rippa!!! lots of water in hot weather even if its in the shade!

did a bit of work today on this tree extended the shari a bit more and gave the branches a bit of a tidy up as they were getting pretty bushy. pretty keen to reduce the top jin but i will get onto that sooned or later needs a smaller pot maybe next spring. still need the tree to fill up in all the right places and the deadwood needs a lick of lime sulfur but it is coming along.

Nice work again Jarryd. Although here is a thought from the man that believes we should not have rules Robert Stevens. An iformal upright tree should never leave the gound straight. I would consider finding a way to alter the angle.
I think the jin is a bit straight and heavy for the tree but I think you will find the balance in time

i think you will find that the tree is coming out at a slight angle brett, it would be about 10 degrees to the left of straight
