Damn! I think I would have kept both trunks shibui. Oh well...gone now.

The lower trunk is excellent. Have you a future design in mind?

I thought strongly slanting - at least close to the angle it is currently. The problem with a change of angle will be the roots - strong, well established radial nebari. If semi cascade was an option I think the lower trunk would have been a better option? A smaller tree is always an option but is it a viable option? Shoots that develop in the next year or so will determine that.

Another 4 years on and not really a lot to show for the time.

The original cut has grown over a bit but this year I found the wood has now rotted under the wound sealer. This one shows the hole after I removed most of the soft wood. I've treated with lime sulphur to slow the decay.

The hole is still about 3cm diameter and about the same depth.

Thanks for the idea Steven.
As you can see I've been focussed on healing the existing large cut so have not really taken a lot of notice of this tree or other possibilities for it for some time. I've really only been pruning to maintain the existing trunk and try to prevent any further excessive thickening and lumpiness.
Fresh eyes have picked up a possibility I hadn't noticed. The question now is whether I want to try to heal up another couple of largish cuts

Hi Neil,
Whether it be when this tree had two major limbs or now one, I reckon it could be a beautiful and rather different example of a maple that is winding its way off an outcrop of some sort. Ok - perhaps that’s not the ‘natural’ or traditional way people may see maples but I see a beautiful future for this tree - I love this stock; hole and all.

I see a nice shohin semi cascade in there for sure . Like Neil said cutting that branch will result in another large scar that will take time to heal. That main scar is actually closing quite well.
