Magnolia healing

I was recently gifted this magnolia and given space is a premium here I have been considering trying to reduce it to bonsai proportions. I have been able to find a fair bit of information here and around the web regarding suitability, training methods, root work and a whole lot more. However, the one thing I haven't found an answer for is how well big cuts heal.

Providing the big cuts can be healed over time I have a rough plan...
It is in a 45ltr bag and doesn't appear root bound so I was thinking of reducing it to a single trunk and shortening that dramatically then let it grow on for a year or two before doing any root work.

Am I on the right track or should I forget it and find a spot in some else's garden?
