Finnaly it is time to start collecting Firethorn and I planned to collect three on the way home from a trip today but after taking two hours to dig this one out the rest will have to wait a few days.
The pictures don't do this tree justic at the moment but I reckon this is one of the best trees I have ever colected(which is not that hard but anyway )
I think this firethorn is very old by the look of the bark, it may be one of the first ones planted in this area that started them turning into a weed.

The lawn will be fine Stymie it is due for a mow in the nest few days and the mess will disappear. I am more worried how I am going to get it down the back under cover before we get a nice warm one tomorrow at 33 deg.
I learnt my lesson a couple of years ago though when building a pond and being to tight to pay for the clay soil to be dumped I spread it out and had a clay mud pool as a lawn for 8 months.
The root ball was great Jarryd but I never like leaving so much old soil behind. I used a contrasting new soil and will have to manage soil dampness carefully between the new and old soil but I felt it was the right thing to do with such an old tree. I have had a buxus from the yard kark it after thinking it could not possibly die with a perfect root ball. One of the few that had plenty of soil left! That was a few years ago though and may be because I was cocky thinking it could not die and leaving it in the elements.
The last two I collected are doing ok and great. One in early spring and one early winter.
I will keep an eye out for a smaller one to post next visit in a few days Jarryd.

These large trees in purpose made boxes are a real pain to move. I've had one in the shadow of the house for two years, hoping that some kind fairy will carry it up to my display area. I'm now considering the building of an external lift to move things up and down when necessary. My playground is on a flat roof if I haven't mentioned it before.

I don't think I have seen your flat roof Stymie.
I am thinking I am going to have to get the welder out and make some sought of trolly for this tomorrow. I have used the normal trolly a few times with bigger trees but this box seems to be a shape that it will not work on

As for barrows and moving. As you know not a young fit man any more even when I was young I was careful with my back. Did not do me any good though.
What I have done is make a platform for my wheel barrow that can be put on or taken off as needed. Wheel barrow's with large rubber wheels are easy to move so are your tree's. They dont go up stairs too well though Stymie. May be a pic tomorrow

The trampoline is thinking outside the square Bretts. A very nice score with the Pyracantha do you know details of the berry colour and size. There are so many different ones. On the moving of heavy trees sitting on the ground buy a heavy duty trolley and weld a very large base plate on it.
P.S by the way Stymie that is nice trunk you have there cant tell from the photo but is it a maple?
