Gonna start trying out some other potting materials this year, what does everyone use now and where do I get it Yarra Valley wise? Any easy to locate materials would be appreciated, good grit components in particular.
I get my mix in bulk from Spotswood holdings at Yarra Glen. They don't do small quantities but they might be able to supply some components????
The mix they make up for me is propagating sand and fine pine bark with added nutrients, etc.
Thanks Shibui. That’s very close, although they probably won’t help me with such a small order. How do you find the propagating sand they use? Is it fine or quite course?
The sand component seems to be very uniform with grit around 4mm? - probably up to 6mm. There may be finer particles but I haven't looked close enough to notice any. From what I can see it looks to be very good size.
I did notice that one of the clubs down there was advertising 'professional bonsai mix' from Yarra Glen in a newsletter. I assume they buy in bulk then distribute smaller amounts to members? Could be worth talking with your club and/or others in your area to see if you can get enough for a min order.
The real advantage of commercial made mix is it has essential nutrients - iron, Mg, Ca, etc that home made mixes often miss out on.
