Walking in the park yesterday. Numerous pines were close together and I thought of this thread. Not Bonsai but lovely bark.
The pines were not labelled and I didn't take shots of their foliage but I loved the colour and texture.
Is it possible to determine different variants of pine from bark alone?

Re: Trunks and bark
#6644 (second from the top,) looks like the ones we call Slash pine up here in Qld. It's a weed, but I LOVE the bark on them. I've pulled up a couple of seedlings from nearby bushland and have been growing them on for a couple of years now. Their needles are long and very untidy...

A couple of different species from the shelf.
Allocasuarina's really do get some great bark, but the Mel is up there too IMO.
Cheers,
Pearcy.

Re: Trunks and bark
Bark of pines is one of the important features that helps narrow down the possible species. Some pines have distinct bark but there are usually several closely related species that look similar so it won't give a definitive ID. Needles and cones are also needed. Is it possible to determine different variants of pine from bark alone?
