While doing 10 laps at the Sales tables at the Bonsai Open i found this tree hidden with a few others. and what a score it was for $25 then dropped by Bonsai World for a $25 pot and hey presto this is what i got. it is a pyracantha right? but $50 total is sweet. pretty good score. again all advice is accepted.
What a lovely little Pyracantha you found there, and very cheap indeed.
I would love to try growing one, but on the rare occasions I do find them, it’s always at bonsai nurseries and they are just young plants, and have always been twisted into really boring corkscrew shapes. Your one has a really nice shape to it.
That's a nice truck line you have. They are a pest in Canberra and are everywhere. Not many people I know bother with them but after I saw Baloc bonsai nursery trees I have been thinking of starting afew myself.

This has inspired me to grow pyracantha myself, I got a young one with some reasonable bends in it to try. It has lots of cutting material on it too so I’ll strike a few and grow some more too

i always looked at pyras and thought nothing of them until i saw this tree and boom buy all the trees.
according to clubbies if you snap the branch your bending aslong as the flesh is still touching the branch is alive.

Simon
How did you know I already snapped a branch??
I pushed the cambium surfaces back together and wrapped some wound putty over it and it seems perfectly happy, but I’ll end up cutting it back anyway!

its bound to happen the branches are so brittle. if you break the wood i've been told to super glue it back together as the cambium would link together again but the internal wood would always be broken. maybe some one with more experience in branch braekings can jump in here.
