Progression of my collection (Or, there's never enough room)

Like probably the majority of us I started small with just a few little sticks in pots. and a mallsai or two. Before I knew it I had to build a shelf to accomodate them.

...and then you found Shibui, ordered trident maples by the dozen ... asked the local grocer for styrofoam boxes... and some time later, you sat down, beer in hand and thought "Whatever happened to the first shelf?"

Oops, accidentally pressed the submit button instead of preview.
So here is the continuation.
Not long and I had to add another shelf as things were getting a bit cluttered.

Things looked OK for a while, but then they just grew too much.

Looks like plenty of room now, but when I put my trees on the shelves ......

Seems there's never enough room. I may have to rationalize my collection a bit,

because there are still some trees around the side of the house that didn't fit on the extended shelving.
I'm sure there are other reading this who have a similar predicament.

This looks very much like how my house looked until I did bite the bullet and rationalise the collection. I still have too many plants for my bench space though.

I found the thinning out good for my mental health. It was always a bit too hectic trying to grow so much, especially during summer. I still have a little more to clear out, but now my collection is a bit more focussed and a little less plant hoarder.

You’ve inspired me to build better shelving out the back; currently my collection sits on a hodge podge of make-do stands - upturned pots, planks of wood, the ground.... no shade cloth. A summer task. Thanks for the post.

I can relate. When I started bonsai I started with just placing my bonsai on my BBQ lid. Then that got too crowded. Then I upgraded to a plank of wood between some milk crates to a full custom built bench. I'm just moving house so I've got some big plans for my next lay out

I am at the other end. Trying to reduce my trees and maybe only keeping a few.

I'm hearing you, and I know I shouldn't but I'm in the process of doing the same. I raised over 70 seedlings in the past few months, not even sure what some are. Mainly Banksia, and various deciduous tress that grow around the place. Yesterday I went out and took round 50 cuttings mostly native to give a go.

Luckily I'm on acreage so space is not an issue, time however may be over summer. Like I said I know better but can't help myself.

You still have a way to go . I can see a green lawn that has to go , that’s at least 50 more trees .

Even a 10 % strike rate on the cuttings I'm looking at 80 odd with the seedlings, group plantings look like the way to go.

I cleaned out abit last year. Still a couple to go next autumn. You got some ripper stuff,sure it would move quickly.
