I was told a port jackson? just want someone to verify.
also when and what type of soil is best for repotting this plant? as it looks quite ready for one.
Looks port jackson to me, although I'm not the one to say. I do want to say, though, it's a lovely tree and those aerial roots are spectacular! Nice one!
Nice tree, needs a good trim n feed. Repot in the warmer months. Not sure how far north you are but your looking more December possibly November for repot.

Any fert will be fine. Figs are greedy buggers and they do not acre where their tucker comes from.
They seem to manage in just about any potting mix as well so just use what you normally do. Just having one mix makes it far easier to manage watering and feeding.
I second the ID though many figs look very similar as bonsai it is most likely PJ fig. Whatever the species it will respond to all the same techniques so repot when it is warm. You can fearlessly cut roots on figs. They will survive almost total root reduction if necessary.
In the meantime feed well over winter to gain some strength for the repot and prune.
