Thanks Jamie,

Tech
Whilst walking through the forest of Bonsai Myths, I found a single small tree.
From it I learned all I needed to know.

Wow those japanese guys were risking their lives collecting bonsai stock. I'm only risking some ...council fines to collect some plants :)
Always we hope someone else has the answer.

it is amazing what some of the collectors and hunters went through just to get the shimpaku and how they went about it. tieing a rope to them selves and swinging away from the rock faces, there must of been countless deaths.

and how lucky was tahei suzuki, being able to come across such a vast valley of natural shimpaku yamadori.
the one picture in black and white is amazing. natures own bonsai. nothing but hundreds of years of refinement from the weather conditions that it had to go through :D

too right there mate, if only is right on.
shimpaku have far become my favourite tree, i have plenty of time to work on them but mate, you cant replicate 100s of years of nature and compress it inot one lifetime.
envious as.

the trees that are left are now protected at least and they would be an absolute wonder to see i reckon :D

They are very interesting are they not. It is even more fun when you ask your Sensei about these things.
If he is Hirotoshi Saitoh he will regale you with all sorts of stories.
When I first met him in 1996 and after a few beers he loves Australian beer Japanese beer Irish beer if its beer he like's it. Also whiskey.

Any way I asked of him, knowing of the feudal system of Japan up to the Meiji period. I admired famous tree that was reputedly 450 years old. It had a pedigree it belonged to a Shogun. My question was how many had lost there Heads as in off with his head.

With a straight face he replied none, but 4 had had to commit Hari Kari. 2 cleaners after they left dirt on the pot. An apprentice gardener because he dropped it. The head gardener for employing an incompetent. I believed that story  .
In 1999 he let me off after another couple of beer's and said you wanted to believe so you did.
I must admit I was taken in by his sence of Humor
