Cherry blossom supplier

Hi all
Looking for some suggestions for suppliers of flowering Cherry Blossoms. I would really love to add a few traditional Japanese species of cherry to my collection and haven’t had much luck sourcing in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne.

Any and all suggestions appreciated.

As actual bonsai you'll struggle, best bet would be somewhere like Conifer Gardens for Kojo-No-Mai, or try Yamina Rare Plants for a wider range but they will all be grafted so you'll need to choose a fairly unobtrusive graft carefully.

Open to buying a large tree or two and growing from cuttings and air layers, to avoid the ugly grafted trunk.

Most normal garden nurseries will get a selection in when they are flowering in Spring, but expect big trees and big prices.

I got my cherry and apricot trees from plantmark. All grafted and hard to bend as hell. And the rootstock is buried deep under the soil.

They were fairly cheap tho. As i recall, I paid approx $14 for a tree in a 15cm pot.
I know Moongate at Bendigo is prepping up some cuttings for sale next year.

I have Kojo-No-Mai in the garden. Wonderful tree. ziz zag pattern growth alternative nodes very small leaves and lovely flowers. Just about all would be grafted so finding a suitable one for bonsai you would be looking . im going to airlayer or at least attempt in spring that tight growth for shohin is too tempting.

I’ve never had any luck air layering any prunus, they’ve all just leaked gooey sap and failed

I'm not sure of the exact species but I have an ornamental plum (it's supposed to be non-fruiting, but it actually produces pretty tasty plums) that I was able to air layer. It was my first attempt at air layering so I'm pretty sure it was a fluke but work trying I reckon.

I’ve only had luck so far rooting 1 year old semi hard wood cuttings of p. Mume. The cherry cuttings ( Varieties Mt Fuji and Kanzan) have not struck for me so far but I’ll keep trying

If you are considering air-layering, think about layering just under the graft - that way the angles are still OK, but you get the benefit of the strong root stock.

If you go to the Nishiki Nursery web site and look at their stock list they have many Japanese varieties. Note they will be grafted. They are a wholesale nursery, I spoke to them re their stock, from memory mine are 60cm standard which is what I wanted but he did say he had low grafted trees also. So you can find out what they have and then order thru Bulleen Art and Garden and they will get it in for you. I ordered two Kojo No Mai for the garden on Monday and I am picking them up this weekend.

With regards cutting of Cherries I take cuttings which are the tip growth from the current year in Winter.The success rate is not great but I have managed to get three out of ten cuttings as an example to grow and eventually flower. Larger cuttings don’t strike at all for me.

You could also try treeman via pm he will have Cherries pre bonsai stock.
