This one is a Trident Maple I got off Shibui at one of the Canberra shows . Tridents don’t grow well up here , the spring frosts knock them around too much . They tend to shoot earlier than the Japanese Maples . This has been in my neighbour’s glasshouse which is on the north facing side of the valley (heaps of sun ) . So it is shooting very early .
I put in a thread graft two years ago to try and correct the inverse taper Issue . The donor branch grows very strongly on the ‘in side ‘ but refuses to grow on the ‘outside ‘ section of the graft . I have defoliated the ‘inside ‘ section a few times but that hasn’t encouraged the ‘outside ‘ to grow . Any ideas .
The nebari is coming along nicely ,I got some seedlings off Shibui to approach graft some roots on to it I have removed one from the back (sorry I forgot to take a photo ) the others need more time . It has been growing in a nursery flat pot and it went back in to it after a root prune .
