I have had this Taxus baccata for some time trying to decide if it was worth the trouble of development, and if it was how would I go about it. Last weekend I decided to try an airlayer to remove a distinct inverse taper.
There is another "bulge" but that could be taken care of with some carving (which has to be done anyway) and the end result could be OK. Hopefully.
Anyway, a few photos.....

Re: Airlayer for Yew
Good job. With airlayers like this I like to put a sphagnum moss layer over the top for two reasons.Watto wrote: ↑September 16th, 2019, 7:46 am I have had this Taxus baccata for some time trying to decide if it was worth the trouble of development, and if it was how would I go about it. Anyway, a few photos.....
1. It keeps the soil moist and lets you monitor moisture levels.
2. The hormones in the sphagnum moss increases overall root growth. (I know you probably applied rooting hormone but still.....)
Hope this works well.

Re: Airlayer for Yew
This air layer attempt sat idle for a year and a quarter and today was the day to get the saw out and see what has happened.
I was pleasantly surprised and have now potted up the result and I hope in the next five or so years I can turn this into a nice shohin size bonsai. A few photos as proof because if there are no photos it didn't happen!

Re: Airlayer for Yew
Thanks R3, I should have probably taken the layer off sooner but as I said the result is pleasing.

Re: Airlayer for Yew
It certainly looks healthier now than it did in the early shots, looks like you've done it a favour watto!
