Morning all. I’ve been looking after JBP’s for over 30 years and I have recently found that my oldest tree (around 60 odd years) has an issue that I have never come across. Every branch tip has more buds than you can count easily 50+. But it has failed to shoot this year or last. I figure if it doesn’t make new needles this year it might not make it through another.
Anyone seen this before? Cheers Kris

Re: Black pine question
Does not sound like anything I am familiar with either but photos are always helpful to fill in the grey areas between your description and our understanding and maybe to show something you may have missed that others might see.
Try to include overall shots of the whole tree as well as good, clear close ups of individual shoots, older needles and the affected buds where possible.

Re: Black pine question
Sounds like a lack of fertiliser to make the growth extend.
are you growing in a totally inert media. If so, it really needs frets at this time of year.

Re: Black pine question
Sounds like a hormonal problem of some sort. 50 buds and no shoot extension! Never seen it. When was the last time it was repotted and how did you go about it? Sometimes if a plant fails to shoot you can force it to do so by keeping in complete darkness for a while. But it must be TOTAL darkness. Not even a sliver of light. Covered with a couple of layers of thick black cloth or covered with a garbage bin or something and kept in the garage.
Try it for a week maybe? Water it and leave it in the dark without looking. If it does move, you will need to thin out the shoot drastically. I very much doubt it has anything to do with fertilizer as fertilizer does not make plants break dormancy.

Re: Black pine question
Hello Kris,
Sounds like a 'Fasciation' abnormality. Sorry i can't get the link to attach.
Look it up and let us know if this may be your plants problem.
When I've seen this growth in the past, my treatment is to prune/remove the infected stems and discard the material to the waste as it can be caused by mites, insects, viral or bacterial.
