WANTED: Crab Apple and Red leaf Japanese Maple
Hey guys,
I really want to get a bigger than "starter" Crab apple to play with, as all I can get here atm is small ones (which is ok, I'm getting af ew of thsoe too =).
I also would like to get a Red leaf (deshojo?) Japanese Maple if anyone has any! Hard to find up here. May or may not like my conditions too much though.
If anyone can help me out, please send me a PM.
Thanks everyone!
Nathan ^_^

Re: WANTED: Crab Apple and Red leaf Japanese Maple
Dunno about Brissy, but Ray has some here. If you ever come this way drop in and see
I am picking up a Red Japanese maple from him on the weekend
Will post to show off
Just re read, and i think the Deshojo is a distinct variety from the Red leaf
I will also be getting another small Deshojo as I lost mine ( 2 year old, due to fungus i think)
Ken

Hahaha rub it in Ken
I'd actually be really keen to head down your way and drop in to Ray's nursery! I hear so much about it on here!
I imagine it to be pretty much bonsai heaven haha.
Hmmm, so the Deshojo isn't the red leaf ones? Ah well. The red one is what I'd like! Whatever species it is
I know Tess doesn't have any at my local nursery, but there are one or two others that might =)

Re: WANTED: Crab Apple and Red leaf Japanese Maple
Nathan, there are 2 nurseries on mt Tamarine 1h from Oxley that sell both of those. the medium size is $49. Big crab apples (both white or red flower varieties) $80 each. Red leaf Japanese maples range from $17 to $120 depend on size. They even have flowering quince that is hard to find in Brisbane.
Always we hope someone else has the answer.

Re: WANTED: Crab Apple and Red leaf Japanese Maple
deshojo is a particular type of red leaf Japanese maple but i dont think it would be very suited to se qld. climate, if i remember correctly they hay a smaller finer leaf, so even if you had success in growing it i think it would be extremely prone to leaf burn, what i have found from experience is if they are hard to find in queensland they are not well suited to our climate, when i worked at bonsai nursery brisane lindsay only ever grew the standard Japanese maples for that reason, on the rare occasion he would try different varieties with little success, however one variety that didn't do to badly was 'sango kaku' or coral bark maple and they are quite stunning,he only had a small amount so there would be very few in the brisbane area and from memory he bought his in tubes from melbourne. heres some pics

Hey Jarryd, that's an awesome idea mate!! I want to have some time off around Feb, so that's something to keep in mind!! Good thinking dude!
Yeah I was bit unsure about the red maples but I really want one =P The red bark looks awesome though!!
Dayne - I went to red dragon once, about 12 months ago, and it was very cool. I'll have to go back soon I think!!

The deshojo that Ray has are bright red when new, but turn a deep green as they mature, Verry nicejamie111 wrote:i think deshojo is a red variety, i think its the leaf that is distinctivly different, i think it has seven lobes and they are very fine and quite serated? dont qoute me on that though palNathanM wrote:Hahaha rub it in Ken

Re: WANTED: Crab Apple and Red leaf Japanese Maple
i knew it was something like that but couldnt be too sure, they definately have some magnificent colour though mate
if deshojo would not be suited to the heat up here, what other red species of maple could be used? i was on the understanding that with the colour comes a tenderness about the tree, in which it can be more tempermental to heat, wind, etc ???
