Hi all!
I've always loved redwoods, so when I saw this guy I had to have it. Right now I'm just letting it grow unchecked.
The seller has done some wiring and stuck it in a bonsai pot but I think I'm going to repot into a pond basket filled with perlite to try and grow the trunk out a bit. Is it too late in the year to repot? I'm in Perth and we haven't really gotten much warm weather yet.

Unfortunately the trunk has some deep grooves from wire that was left on too long. Is there something in particular I should do to try and correct it?
I'll make sure to keep an eye on the wire that's currently on the branches so the same thing doesn't happen again.

I actually really like the pot so hopefully I can use it again in a few years

Mate , redwoods have thick bark and thicken quickly so loose thicker wire is better than firm wrapped thin wire .
I wouldn't worry about wire marks on a small tree such as this as they will grow out over time .
Ground growing can see these grow 1.5-2.0m per year with good root run . If the base movement is set i would remove the wire and let it grow , wiring again mid season .

I agree with Ian. They will grow well with room for the roots, but not in a pot that restricts the roots like this. It’s too late in the growing season to do any root work.

You could carefully move it to a larger pot without disturbing the roots. Or to stay on the safe side, you could put it in a gravel tray or on the ground, and let the roots escape.

In any case, beware drying out from being in a small pot over summer.

Hi tarlek. In Perth also and I would still repot evergreens this year provided good aftercare (part shade initially, monitoring water). Maybe compromise on the amount of bare rooting you do due to the late window.

Hope it goes well.

The bark is easily damaged in Spring - to avoid a botanical degloving injury, it may be safer to cut the wire off rather than uncoiling it.
The tree may be wired into the pot - check underneath and cut the wire there too when you’re trying to remove the tree.
